There are an enormous range of finishing options for natural buildings, many of which are cheap, easy, non-toxic, beautiful, durable, and fun.
The inside of Sun Ray Kelley's cob yoga studio in Washington State sports a colorful aliz (clay-slip finish) over earthen plaster. Stabilized with flour paste and made sparkly by the addition of mica flakes, aliz can be mixed up with safe ingredients in your kitchen, then painted on with a brush.
Earthen plasters can be made from most local soils and applied with bare hands. This clay plaster in Nova Scotia protects the straw bale wall beneath from fire, moisture, and pests.

In an annual ritual, community members prepare a clay plaster to touch up the adobe church in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Built in 1815, this historic structure was almost destroyed by the application of cement stucco in 1967.

Bill Steen demonstrates an essential step in natural plastering--testing samples of various mixes for color, texture, hardness and durability.
